Build a Fort

YOU WILL NEED:

✓1 flashlight
✓Your Bible marked at Psalm 56:3 and Psalm 18:1-2

GET STARTED

Have your family members “ransack” the house to get pillows, blankets, chairs, and whatever else they can find to build a fort. Take your time making it and let your kids be creative with it. (For example, they might want to make a tunnel entrance.) Build it big enough for everyone to fit inside.

From inside the fort use your flashlight to read Psalm 56:3.

ASK—What is something you’re scared of?

SHARE—Share something you were scared of when you were a child.

ASK—What should we do when we’re scared? (Trust God.)

ASK—Why can we trust God? (He’s faithful. He’ll never let you down. He’ll always keep His Word, etc.)

Read Psalm 18:1-2 from your Bible.

ASK—How is God like a fort (fortress, stronghold) for you? (In old days people went inside a fortress to be safe. Its walls protected them from harm. God is a shield for those who follow Him and like a fort, you are safe in Him.)

ASK—Does this mean that bad things will never happen to someone who is living for Jesus? Why or why not? (Bad things still happen to good people, but there’s nothing so bad that God can’t turn it to your good.)

If they want a further answer, explain that sometimes we do wrong things and these bad choices bring “bad” things into our lives. But sometimes we do everything right and someone else does something wrong and we get hurt because of it. Even so, there’s nothing your children will ever do that is so bad that God can’t forgive them and there’s nothing so bad that can happen to them that God can’t turn it around to their good if they love Him and are walking with Him. (See Romans 8:28 for a great promise.)

PRAY—List prayer requests below and thank God that He will always take care of you.

After you’re done playing in the fort, feel free to have a pillow fight or time for your family to see how fast they can tear the fort down and put everything away. Have fun and enjoy!

Treasure Hunt

✓Something to be the treasure such as a candy bar or a coupon for an ice cream cone, etc. Be creative.

GET STARTED

Copy the following clues on individual slips or pieces of paper. Then hide all but the first one at their designated spots. Tell your children that you’re sending them on a treasure hunt.

CLUE #1
Don’t hide this one. This is the first clue you’ll give to your children.
Search the backs of closet doors for Clue #2.

CLUE #2
Hide this on the back of a closet door.
Go to a mirror to look for Clue #3.

CLUE #3
Hide this on a mirror.
Go to a toilet to look for Clue #4.

CLUE #4
Hide this on top of a toilet lid.
Go to a bed to look for Clue #5.

CLUE #5
Hide this on or in a bed.
Go to the shower to look for Clue #6.

Hide this in the shower.
Go to the kitchen to look for Clue #7.

Hide this somewhere in the kitchen.

LET’S TALK

After the hunt is finished, sit down with your children.

ASK—Would it have been easier or harder to find the treasure without the instructions?

ASK—What instructions has God given us for living?

SAY—The Bible is God’s instruction book on how to live life and you’ll never find what you’re looking for in life unless you follow Jesus and what He says in the Bible. Listen to what the Bible says about how to stay away from doing bad things.

Read Psalm 119:11 from your Bible.

PRAY—List prayer requests below and thank God for Jesus and the Bible and for giving us instruction on how to live.

GET STARTED

Take turns creating fun, new hair-dos for your family. Your kids will especially enjoy doing this to you! If you want, you might even want to purchase some temporary hair color to add to your kid’s hair. (Wal-Mart carries some for less than $2, but if you do this be sure to read the directions carefully.)

SAY—We all look a little different, but this change won’t last. When Jesus comes into a person’s life, though, He brings a change that lasts forever.

ASK—How do you think Jesus changes people’s lives? (He forgives their sins, takes away the guilt of sin, gives people a new life; they can know for sure they’re going to heaven; people live differently when they are walking with God.)

Read Acts 10:1-19 from your Bible.

ASK—What difference do you think Jesus made in Paul’s life? (Paul had hurt, mistreated, and even killed Christians, but after he committed his life to Christ, he became one of the greatest heroes of the Bible. He spent the rest of his life sharing Jesus with others and he even wrote over half of the New Testament. What a difference!)

SAY—Jesus is so great, who wouldn’t want Him in their lives!

PRAY—List prayer requests below and thank God for the difference Jesus makes in life.

Hit or Miss

✓Items to make something that shoots at a target. It could be a shoe you sling through the air at a hula-hoop or a chalk circle you drew on your patio. Or, a paper airplane you throw and try to get it into a trash can, or a water balloon you toss at a certain brick on your house, etc. You can be very creative with this and even play more than one style.
✓A Bible marked at Romans 6:23

GET STARTED

Let family members take turns shooting at the target, but every time they (or you) miss, say “That’s like Sin.”

When you’re finished, ask your family:

ASK—What’s sin? (Anything wrong.)

ASK—Why do you think I was saying, “That’s like Sin?”

SAY—Sin means to miss the mark or to miss the target. God is perfect and we miss the mark of God’s perfection (or holiness) every time we sin.

ASK—What are some ways we sin?

ASK—What do you think the punishment for sin is ? (Death.)

Read Romans 6:23 from your Bible.

SAY—The punishment for sin is death. This is the reason that Jesus came to earth and lived a perfect life. Then when He died on the cross, since He was perfect and didn’t deserve to die, God punished Him for all the wrong things you and I would ever do. He took the punishment for our sins so that He can forgive them if we give our lives to Him. This is the only way to be forgiven and the only way to go to heaven.

PRAY—List prayer requests below and thank Jesus for dying to make a way to take your sins away.

PILLOW FIGHT—Part 1

Have a family pillow fight—Set boundaries, clear an area and have fun. You may also want to set limits depending on the age of your children.

Take a break, sit on your pillows and ASK—What was your pillow made for?

SAY—Our pillows were made for sleeping, not fighting. Of course it is fun to use them for a good fight, but you’d never really win a fight if all you had was a pillow. Why? That’s not what it was made for. Imagine armies going into battle, all carrying fluffy pillows—that’s crazy!

SAY—Just like our pillows were made for a reason, God made you for a reason too. He has great plans for your life and everything you’ve ever wanted in life is found only in Christ.

PILLOW FIGHT—Part 2

Have one family member protect another during the pillow fight. Then take turns protecting each other.

SAY—God’s purpose for you is to give your life to Jesus and follow Him every day in every way. When you do this, you can know that God is a shield for you. God becomes your personal protector.

Read Psalm 18:1-4 from your Bible.

SAY—God cares about everything in your life. Because of this, you can give your cares to God because He cares for you.

Read 1 Peter 5:7 from your Bible.

PRAY—List your family’s “cares” or prayer requests below and thank God for making you special, for being your shield and for always taking care of you.

“I Don’t Need This Anymore”

A number of years ago, I stood outside an old, leaning house. Years of neglect marked the small place. There was trash strewn across the front yard and it was squished along of row of other inner-city homes. Across the street was an abandoned field with chest-tall grass and I could hear dogs barking all around. Standing next to a pile of beer cans on the front porch, I gently knocked on the door. When it opened, my visitation partner and I saw one of the biggest men I’ve ever seen. He was taller than the door frame and his shadow filled the sides. He invited us inside and we stepped forward to see him in the light. He was muscle from head to toe, wearing only gray shorts, and as he closed the door, he began to make fists. I had spoken to him earlier on the phone and he had been expecting us but he suddenly became angry. Muscles grew across his body as he stiffened. He raised his fists to his head and everything inside me screamed, “Get out of here. He’s going to kill you!” But then he turned and leaned on the wall.

“I hate my life,” he said as tears streamed down his face.

“Kenny,” I said, “Let’s sit down and talk.”

I sat in the middle on the couch, sandwiched between this giant of a man and my friend who immediately began sharing Jesus with him. This man was a ex-convict, just recently out of prison but already back in a world of hurt and trouble. He never told us what he had done to spend so many years in jail, only that if he told us, “you would want to leave this place and never talk to me again.”

I watched this man argue that God could never forgive him and then soften as the Holy Spirit brought conviction and truth. At last, I watch as he bowed his head and prayed one of the most simply but powerful prayers I’ve ever heard, “God, I got nothing to give you but if you’ll take me, I’ll come. Amen.”

He looked up. For the first time, a smile filled his face. His eyes, that had looked so dead, now looked so alive. God had saved him!

Moments later, as we continued talking about his new life in Christ, he stood up and grabbed something from the coffee table. We followed to the kitchen as he lifted a beer can and drained it down the sink. “I don’t need this anymore.”

God changes lives. Pray for us as we seek to reach those who normally wouldn’t come to church.

Kids are Literal – God and a Dead Cat

A young mother was trying to comfort her daughter when her pet kitten died, saying, “Remember, dear, Fluffy is up in heaven now with God.”

“But, mommy,” the girl sobbed. “What in the world would God want with a dead cat?”

Of course the purpose of this funny story is NOT about pets in heaven but to show that sometimes we try to share concepts without realizing that kids are literal.

A little girl told her Sunday School teacher, “I don’t want Jesus in my heart!” This teacher came to me very upset. I went to the classroom and knelt down in front of this 5-year old.

“Your teacher told me that you don’t want Jesus in your heart,” I said. “Can you tell me why?”

“Because He’s a big man and I’m a little girl!”

She was being literal: Big man + little heart = Not something she wanted!

As you teach your children (both at church and at home), keep in mind that they are very literal. Listen to your words for their literal meaning and when you’re done, ask your kids to tell you what they heard. This is a great way to know what they’re understanding because what you say and what they hear might just be two different things.*

Who’s Your Daddy

GET STARTED

Read Luke 11:1 from your Bible.

ASK—In the prayer, what did Jesus call God? (Father)

ASK—Is everyone a child of God? (No. Everyone is a creation of God but not everyone is a child of God.)

Read John 1:12 from your Bible.

ASK—What makes someone a child of God? (They have to “receive” Him.)

ASK—How does someone “receive” Jesus? (By giving their lives to Him. By accepting Him as their Lord and Savior.)

SAY—There is only one way to be a child of God; only one way to go to heaven; only one way to be forgiven of your sins, and that’s by giving your life to Jesus and accepting Him as the Lord of your life.

SHARE about when, how and why you gave your life to Jesus. Let your child know that if they ever have any questions about Jesus or heaven, they can ask you.

Stay Alert

-A Bible marked at Colossians 4:2

PLAY the following game: Position your child with his or her back to you somewhere in the room. He has to keep his eyes closed. Point out a line or boundary somewhere behind him and tell him that you are going to try to sneak up behind him and touch him. If he turns around after you cross the line or boundary, then he wins, but if turns around too soon—before you cross the line or boundary, then you win. Play a few times and then switch roles. Let him sneak up on you.

SAY—In the game you had to be alert, listening for any movement. The Bible talks about us staying alert too.

Read Colossians 4:2 from your Bible.

POINT—As you pray, God wants you to stay alert and not be distracted.

ASK—What are some things that might distract you as you pray? (Drifting thoughts, daydreaming, or even get so caught up in asking and asking and asking for things that you don’t take time for other kinds of prayer.)

ASK—Besides asking God for things, what else can you do when you pray?

SAY—Remember A.C.T.S.

(1) You can Adore God—praise Him, tell Him how awesome He is, etc..;

(2) You can Confess your sins and ask God to forgive you;

(3) You can give God Thanks for anything and everything;

(4) You can ask God to Supply your needs and requests. These are all different parts of prayer.

PRAY—Tonight when we pray I want us to do all four of these. First, each of us will praise God (Adore God) for something; Then we will Confess something to God; Then we will Thank God for something; Then we will Ask God (Supplication) for something.

GET STARTED

Let your family take turns answering the following question:

ASK—If you had three wishes and you knew that whatever you wished for would come true, what would your wishes be?

Listen to what the Bible says about asking God for things:

Read the last line of James 4:2 and all of 4:3 from your Bible.

SAY—Did you know that the Bible says that there are certain things that we don’t have because we don’t ask for them? And there are other things we don’t get because we ask for them for the wrong reasons.

SAY—It’s not wrong to ask God for things, but know that, like a good Father, God is not going to give you something that He knows won’t be good for you.

ASK—What if you wanted to eat five ice cream sundaes at one time? Would I let you? (No, because it wouldn’t be good for you.)

ASK—What if you wanted to play in the middle of a busy street? Would I let you? (No, because it wouldn’t be safe for you.)

ASK—What if we were in the middle of a store and you pointed out something that you really, really wanted? Might I get it for you? (Yes, but not always. I might get it for you now and I might get it for you later, but I won’t get you something that I know won’t be good for you.)

SAY—In the say way, God is a good father for all those who have given their lives to Him. You can ask Him for anything and know that He will always do what is best for you.

PRAY—Take turns praying and be sure to thank God for being a great Heavenly Father who answers prayer.

RULES—You can’t cram everything into your mouth and you have to take one bite at a time. (An interesting fact: A person can only eat a few pieces of bread before it becomes very difficult because the bread absorbs all the moisture in a person’s mouth.)

Read Matthew 7:7-11 from your Bible.

ASK—If you came to me and ask me for a piece of bread, would I give you a stone to eat? (No.)

ASK—If you came to me and ask me for a fish, would I give you a snake to eat? (No.)

SAY—Jesus was making the point that if earthly parents know how to give good things to their children, how much more does God, who is a Heavenly Father for all those who have given their lives to Him, know how to give good things to His children.

SAY—God loves you and you can always talk to Him about anything. God loves to give good things to His children.

ASK—Is there anything that you would like to talk to God about tonight?

PRAY—Take turns praying and be sure to thank God for being such a good Father.

ASK—Does God always answer prayer? (Yes.)

ASK—How does God always answer prayer? (God ALWAYS answers prayer in one of three ways: He answers by saying “Yes” or “No” or “Later—not right now—wait a while.” God doesn’t always answer yes, but He does always answer.)

SAY—God loves you and you can always talk to Him about anything.

-Something you can throw.

-A Bible marked at 1 Peter 5:7.

TELL your child that you are going to throw an item to them and you want them to catch it and throw it back. Do this several times.

ASK—What does it mean to “cast” something? (“Casting” is another way of saying “throwing.”)

SAY—We are going to read about something that God wants us to throw His way.

Read 1 Peter 5:7 from your Bible.

ASK—What does God want you to “cast” on Him? (Your cares.)

ASK—Some of your cares or all of your cares? (All your cares.)

ASK—Why can you cast all your cares on God? (Because He cares for you.)

TOSS the item back and forth but each time you throw it, say a care or worry that someone might have.

ASK—What are some cares or worries that you have?

PRAY—Take turns praying and let each member of your family tell God about a care or worry (something that concerns them)—something they are throwing God’s way and trusting Him with. For example, “Dear Lord, Grandma is sick. Please help her to get better. I give this to you. In Jesus’ Name—Amen.”

Christmas Family Devotion #9

FOOD FOR THOUGHT, part 4

You will need:

1 bag of Large Marshmallows
A candle
A Bible marked at 2 Corinthians 5:17

Get Started

Take turns roasting marshmallows over a candle. This can be safely done inside, but be sure to tell your children never to do this unless you are with them. Also, if you put the marshmallow on a fork to hold it over the flame, don’t immediately stick it into your mouth. Instead, scrape it onto a plate and use a separate utensil with which to eat it

ASK—How did the marshmallow change when it was over the fire? (It looked different. It even tasted different. It got hot, etc.)

SAY—Just like the flame brought a change to the marshmallows, Jesus can bring a change to anyone who is willing to give their lives to Him.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 from your Bible.

SAY—It doesn’t matter how good or bad a person is or what they look like or what mistakes they’ve made, Jesus is willing to save anyone who comes to Him. Jesus can even change the heart of the meanest person in the world if that person is willing to accept Him as Lord and Savior.

PRAY—Pray for someone you know whom you think doesn’t know Jesus.
