Sin is Not a Solution

Amidst an angry mob, the Roman proconsul took pity on such a gentle old man and urged Polycarp to proclaim, “Caesar is Lord”. If only Polycarp would make this declaration and offer a small pinch of incense to Caesar’s statue he would escape torture and death. To this Polycarp responded, “Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and He never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?” Steadfast in his stand for Christ, Polycarp refused to compromise his beliefs, and thus, was burned alive at the stake.

The Leprosy of Pride

Recently I have had a story from 2 Chronicles 26:15-27:2 stuck in my mind. Chapter 26 has been talking about the success of King Uzziah and this portion begins by saying, “for he was marvelously helped until he was strong” (v. 15). Did you catch that? He was marvelously helped (by God) until he was strong. Then the story continues, “But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord his God” (v. 16). Wow! Here is a good king, who did right in the sight of God (v. 4), who sought the Lord (v. 5), but when he became “successful” he stopped relying on God’s strength and began to rely on his own. Then suddenly you find him doing what he would have never done–He enters the temple to burn incense to the Lord, something that only the priests were allowed to do. The priests resist him, their earthly king, and he burns with anger. Then…boom! A spot of leprosy breaks out on his forehead. The priests “hurried him out of there, and he himself also hastened to get out because the Lord had smitten him. And King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death…” (vv. 20-21).

Pushing the Rock

God desires faithfulness and surrender, not worldly success, which is what so many Christians and even churches seem to be hung up on. An illustration has been coming to mind a lot lately: The story goes that a man heard from the Lord and the Lord told him to push a large stone. In faithfulness, day after day, he pushed the stone as hard as he could. From the early morning to the sunset, he pushed and pushed. He gave his all to push. But as the years passed he began to grow frustrated. He had pushed for years but the stone had not moved one inch. In agony he apologized to God, to which the Lord responded: “My faithful son, I told you to push the rock, not to move it.”

Dribbling Dr. Pepper

Earlier today I went to a convenient store…I took my two youngest sons, ages one and three, the youngest in a stroller. We first picked up a cup of Dr. Pepper for my wife. Then I grabbed four “bug juices” for my four sons. Then I balanced two Gatorades for some gentlemen laying carpet in our house. I balanced my way to the counter, paid and was glad to get the bottles in a bag. So picture this, I’m pushing a stroller with one hand. In the other hand I’m holding a cup of Dr. Pepper with a dangling bag with six bottles, all while encouraging my 3-year old to stay close.

Staff Infection?

You wouldn’t work with an aids patient who was bleeding if you yourself had open wounds and no  gloves, unprotected. Then why? Why would we send our Christians, the children of God, into a lost, infectious world with open wounds and no protection? No. Instead we feed them Turkish delight and spread the infection even further. Shame on us, His “anointed”, for being so arrogant. For knowing that we are safe from the fire that will one day consume the infection! The infection that plagues this world! The infection Christians are immune to. What honor? What glory do we bring to God when we turn a blind eye, a deaf ear, a mute mouth, and a hard heart to the sin that we have allowed to plague our churches? How can we continue to ask God for revival when the ball is clearly in our court?

Author of Salvation

God is the Author of salvation.
For some people this is can be hard to grasp. I don’t mean this in an arrogant way. I think that for some Christians we take advantage of the knowledge that we hold on to. We flaunt the grace that we wear. But for some they ask questions. Not because they don’t believe. But simply because they don’t understand. They live in fear of seeking answers because people may think the worst. They want to understand. They just don’t.

LOL

The night before Thanksgiving we stayed at my mom’s. So Titus, our two year old, slept in the same room as Kolby and I. Titus had been asleep for quite sometime before Kolby and I went to bed. Just as we were about to go to sleep we started to hear some movement and then…Laughter.

Relationship

This morning I got to be in the presence of God. I wasn’t really asking anything…just talking. He reminded me of who He is, how big He is. It is relationship. A time to talk and a time to listen. It was clear and immeasurable. The God of all the universe met me this morning. Just to talk! And He would meet me any moment of any day…all day. That is awesome. That is God!

Have you been with God today?

40-Day Feast

We’ve all heard of a forty-day fast, but what about a forty-day feast? No, not forty days of pure gluttony but forty days of “feasting” on God’s word. Mary Beth, my wife, originally coined the term and is using it to write about forty days of feasting on what God is doing in her life. My take on it is a little different: Forty days during which every day you read a book of Bible from beginning to end at one sitting.

Applause

Tonight I went to a Third Day Christian concert. Toward the end, the band left the stage, as they typically do, before returning for that final, incredible song. After they left, people cheered; they whistled; they applauded. I watched as 7,000 or so people clapped as one, waiting for the band’s reappearance. Suddenly I imagined what it will be like in heaven someday when millions of believers stand before the throne of God, cheering and applauding and shouting with excitement and anticipation of worshipping their Lord and Savior.

More Weight!

Have you ever read “The Crucible”? You know the fiction story of the young girls in the 1700s who start accusing all these people of being witches and being under the rule of the devil. The actions of these girls sent the people on a witch hunt. Blinded by fear and false sense of “holy” purpose, they carried out acts of injustice in the name of God. Well if you haven’t it’s really not half bad. It’s a sad story in so many ways, but it makes some good points.
