Thankfulness

1 THESSALONIANS 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

PSALM 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, Into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

PSALM 30:12

To the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. O Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

Worry

ROMANS 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

1 PETER 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

PROVERBS 3:5-6

Trust the Lord with all your heart, And don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will direct your paths.

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. The peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

PHILIPPIANS 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

ISAIAH 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you; don’t be dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

MATTHEW 6:25-26

Therefore, I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will put on. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?

MATTHEW 6:31-34

Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be added to you. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

Your Body

1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20

Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:16-17

Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, which you are.

Tips for Leading Family Devotions

Here are a few tips to help you lead family devotions:

Enjoy yourself

Set aside a time when you can have fun leading your family into the truths of the Bible. If you’re not having fun, then your children won’t either.

Keep a Good Attitude

Let this be your favorite time of the week and a top priority. After all, what is more important than what you are about to do with your family?

Don’t Preach

This should be an interactive time where the whole family can talk and discuss.

Don’t Bore

Keep you family devotions short, fast-paced and to the point. Don’t drag them out. Length of time and spirituality are not one-in-the-same. So don’t talk long and don’t pray long.

Take Your Time

Even though you want to keep your devotion time short, if your family is having fun, don’t cut it off too soon.

Be Willing

Your children will only go as far as you go, which means, if you only do the activity halfway, they’ll only do it halfway too. Be willing to get down on the floor, to get inside a tent, to throw a pillow or make a paper airplane. They may not remember all the things you tell them, but you’re making memories that will last a lifetime.

Always Listen

During these sessions you should ask your kids a lot of questions. Listen closely and be careful not to cut them off, talk down to them or correct them in a manner that will make them hesitant to share in the future. Sometimes we jump to fix things without fully listening. Listen to what they are saying but also listen to what they are not saying.

Keep it Up

Make a commitment, put it on your calendar, and stick to it.

20 Questions Series, part 10

RULES

Explain to your family that they are trying to guess a secret object. You will give them a hint such as “This is a person, place, or thing.” Let each person one at a time choose a number between 1 and 20 and whatever number is chosen, read that number clue. After hearing the clue, the person will try to guess the answer. See who will be the first person to discover the hidden object. For fun, you can also have your family create more turns by choosing and developing their own “20 Questions” which you can play following your family devotion.

Hint: I’m a Thing

The answer can be found at the end of the clues.

1. I help you walk

2. God gave me to you

3. Most people have two of me

4. You put socks on me

5. People tell jokes about me when I have a bad odor

6. I have a heel

7. I can run

8. I wear socks

9. I don’t have a mouth

10. I might smell

11. I have five toes

12. You step on me

13. I can kick people

14. I help you to play sports

15. I might get cold if you don’t cover me at night

16. I have an arch

17. You can stand on one of me

18. I’ll hurt if you stub my toe

19. Dancers need me

20. I wear shoes

Answer: Feet or Foot

DISCUSSION

SAY: People can use their bodies to do good or bad.

ASK:

-How can people use their hands to do good? To do bad?

-How can people use their feet to do good? To do bad?

-How can people use their mouths to do good? To do bad?

SAY: Listen to this verse about beautiful feet…

Read Romans 10:13-15

SAY: The Bible says they have “beautiful feet” because they bring the Good News to others. You can use your hands, feet and mouths to show other people the Good News that Jesus is real, that He loves them, and that He died and rose again to make a way to save them from their sins. If you live for Christ and share Him, the Bible says that you have beautiful feet.

If you want, have everyone take off their shoes and compare feet. How beautiful someone’s feet are has nothing to do with how good they look or smell—It has to do with how they share the Good News of Jesus with the people around them.

Take prayer requests and PRAY with your family.

(EXTRA: Make the word “Foot” or “Feet” your Word of the Day and see how many times your family can use it in conversations in the next 24 hours.)

Answer: Tongue

DISCUSSION

ASK: Did you know your tongue is one of the most powerful weapons in the world? How can your tongue hurt people? Has anyone ever hurt your feelings with their tongue? What are other ways we can do damage with our tongues?

SAY: Listen to what the Bible says about how powerful the tongue is. These verses are going to talk about several ways that tongue is dangerous. Listen for what sticks out to you the most.

Read James 3:2-12

ASK: What part sticks out to you the most? How can we guard our tongues from doing evil? How can we use our tongues to do good?

Take prayer requests and PRAY for your family to use their tongues wisely.

If you want, you can have a tongue competition too—See how far they can stick out their tongues; can anyone touch their nose with their tongue; can anyone twist their tongue upside down; can anyone talk without moving their tongue.

Answer: Grave

DISCUSSION

ASK: Have you ever been afraid of death?

SAY: Most people fear dying but if you know Jesus, there’s nothing to be scared of.

ASK: Why do you not need to live in fear of death if you have given your life to Christ?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:55-58

SAY: Because Jesus died and rose again, He conquered death and the grave. Death has no power over those who have been saved by Him. We will die physically but dying physically means living forever in Heaven. In other words, there’s nothing to fear.

Take prayer requests and PRAY for your family.

Answer: Water

DISCUSSION

Have your family race to see who can get their Bibles and get back first.

Show your family an easy way to find the book of Psalms by opening to the middle of the Bible. This usually will put you in Psalms or Proverbs. Help your family find Psalm chapter 42 and then to find and read verse 1-2.

Read Psalm 42:1-2

ASK: What is this verse talking about?

SAY: This verse is giving a comparison. The writer of this Psalm says that he is thirsty for God in the same way that a deer gets thirsty for a stream of water.

ASK: What does it mean to be thirsty for God?

ASK: What is it like to be thirsty for water? (You want it. You need it and when you’re really thirsty, you need it so bad that you can’t get your mind off of it. It’s a necessity for life.)

SAY: When a person is thirsty for God: They want to be with Him; they know they need Him so bad it’s hard to think of anything else; It’s a reminder that just as we need air and water to live, a person must have Jesus to have real life too.

ASK: How “thirsty” are you to know God? How do you desire to know God better everyday? If you don’t have a desire to know Him better, why do you think you feel this way?

SAY: There’s something else God wants us to be thirsty for too.

Help your family turn to the book of Matthew. First find Psalms by turning to the middle of the Bible. Then turn to the middle of the half on the right. This should put you somewhere near or in the Gospels. Matthew is the first Gospel.

Read Matthew 5:6.

SAY: God wants us to thirst for Him and His righteousness.

Take prayer requests and PRAY that your family will thirst for God.

Answer: The Bible or God’s Word

DISCUSSION

Have your family race to see who can get their Bibles and get back first.

Show your family an easy way to find the book of Psalms by opening to the middle of the Bible. This usually will put you in Psalms or Proverbs. Help your family find Psalm 119 (the longest chapter in the Bible) and then to find and read verse 105.

Read Psalm 119:105

ASK: What does this verse mean?

SAY: Imagine walking through the dark. You can’t see where you are going or what is in front of you. What do you need? (A light.)

SAY: God’s Word is a lamp to our feet. It shows us how to live, what to do, and what not to do…God’s Word is also a light to our path. It shows us God’s plans for us.

SAY: On a dark path, you can’t always see everything that is ahead but you can see enough to know where to step next. God’s Word will always guide you in every situation to know God’s plan for you.

ASK: How can we, as a family, know God’s Word better?

Take prayer requests and PRAY with your family.

(EXTRA: Make the word “Word” your Word of the Day and see how many times your family can use it in conversations in the next 24 hours.)
